WHAT WE'RE ABOUT

LMA is a strength academy that provides Structure, Accountability, and Education to its community.

We believe in prioritizing functional strength and quality of movement.

 

Working with LMA means:

Coach Kar

Karleena Wiebe is one of the owners and head coaches of LMA.โฃ

โฃ

Kar was a highly competitive gymnast, from the age of 7-18, who had a path to collegiate recruitment before suffering a catastrophic injury that would challenge her beliefs and change her life’s direction. โฃ

โฃ

Over the course of her gymnastics career she achieved over 100 gold medals! The following is a short list of some of the highlights of her time in the sport .  โฃ

Karleena stayed involved in the sport for the last 13 years coaching gymnastics from pre-school to competitive children. Since gymnastics, she has also taken on other athletic endeavours, including: โฃ

  • Bodybuilding where she took home 2x 1st place trophies at her first showโฃ

  • Aerial Arts: Pole fitnessโฃ

  • Powerlifting & Olympic Liftingโฃ

Initially, Karleena had her eyes set on medicine; she achieved her Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology and Biology and was in the process of applying to medical school. Eventually she decided she wanted to intervene sooner, and that pursuing a career preventing injuries would inevitably create a greater impact on the world than being on the reactionary side of medicine. Her experience of rehabilitation through exercise was ultimately what made her decide to create a career around building stronger, more durable humans.

MEET OUR TEAM

The Loaded Movement Academy was developed from over 2 decades of combined experience between company founders Adam Mackay & Karleena Wiebe in bodybuilding, powerlifting, gymnastics, and functional strength training.

Adam had just quit his job, to pursue his bodybuilding goals and start his career as a strength coach. He had recently stepped off the national bodybuilding stage where he competed against the best natural bodybuilders in Canada.

Karleena had just finished her undergraduate degree, and was looking for a new challenge Long story short: Karleena hired Adam to get her ready for her first bodybuilding competition. And the adventure began…

After a long prep, Karleena ended up walking off stage with 2x 1st place trophies, with the judges feedback that her glutes were too overpowering and she was TOO muscly. Kar didn’t feel right about the idea of sacrificing quality muscle by making herself smaller just to fit into a superficial perspective of what perfect is. Adam and Kar had a change in perspective when Adam hired a new powerlifting coach, Cole Thevenot of Blacksmith Fitness. The blend of functional strength training and powerlifting had a strong impact on the coaching techniques Adam was using with Kar.

 

Both founders soon realized that their strength and performance pursuits were far more fulfilling than their physique accomplishments would ever be.

 

Adam and Karleena spent the next 2 years studying and practicing functional strength training, powerlifting, and olympic weightlifting, by going to seminars, working with mentors, and competing. They were now coaching clients at a performance centre with no mirrors or machines, only free weights, squat racks, benches and barbells. They partnered with leading professions in physiotherapy, chiropractic, and kinesiology. This was the beginning of LMA.

 

The term “Loaded movement” was inspired by a seminar, called “ The Principles of Loaded Movement”, that made a huge impact on the founder of LMA, Adam MacKay.

The word “Academy”: was used because education was the key to success in the whole process. Everything is a learning process, this isn’t about doing certain things, it is about learning. LMA educates its members about strength, biomechanics, physiology, anatomy, nutrition, mindset, habits and behaviours, with the belief that what is known and understood can be implemented.
